Rab Fair (Rapska fjera)

We must mention one of the most important events of the whole island – Rab fair – which takes place every year from 25th till 27th of July. Rab fair is a medieval festival which celebrates and signifies the patron saints of Rab – St. Jacob, St. Ana and St. Cristopher. Those days are also the greatest holidays of Rab – Dies Vitoraie and Dies Natalis – which have been celebrated continuously for over seven centuries. The holidays are declared as a tribute to king Ljudevit the Great who freed Rab from the Venetians; and also for the sacred remembrance on St. Cristopher thanks to whom Rab was freed from Normans in 1075. At that time – time of the fair – Rab turns into a medieval stage holding various workshops of medieval skills. On the streets and squares you can find medieval bakers, lace makers, masons, blacksmiths, carpenters and scribes. Rab fair ends with the traditional tournament of shooting with antique crossbows only used by balastrieri from San Marino (or, still active crossbowmen of Rab). Knight games are held from 1364 in honor and memory of the chivalric defense of the town in the past. The chivalric games are held on the Square of St. Christopher four times a year – on the 27th July, on the first Saturday after May 9th , May 30th and August 15th .
